What would Jesus say to the 21st Century Church?
Today, Jesus' message to his church might differ in some regions. Yet, wherever there is wealth, emerging wealth, or even perceived wealth; wherever people are self-confident instead of Christ-dependent; wherever people's hearts hearken to voices other than His voice, I can imagine Jesus delivering words of rebuke, correction, encouragement, and hope to those who love Him and seek to serve Him. One of your books defines ‘contrast’ as juxtapositions of color, tone, or emotion; the difference or degree of difference between things having similar or comparable natures; and a person or thing that exhibits differences when compared with another. These definitions are all good; I like the last one the most. It’s closer to what I have in mind. When you ‘do’ church I want my people to show contrasts – exhibiting differences when compared with another. Yet, often the Church in North America, regardless of the genre of your music produces sameness. Why?
Instead of carefully recruited likeness, work towards communities that are bursting with the contrasting possibilities inherent in diversity. I urge you to reconsider what you seek and how you pursue what you desire. Learn to think both:and instead of always defaulting to either:or.
