This two-part blog posting was penned and then preached by a friend of mine, Cheryle Hanna.
Cheryle is the Associate Minister of Discipleship at our church. Last Wednesday evening, at an Ancient-Future Worship service, Cheryle gave the homily. In just six, short minutes, Cheryle delivered resonating truth.
As we enter Advent, refocusing our minds and hearts on preparing for the coming of the King of the mysterious Kingdom, Cheryle's words advocate changes most of us likely need to make in some way or another. With Cheryle's permission, I offer her thought-provoking, soul-stirring words to you as wisdom for a change.
If Advent is a season of preparation, anticipation and expectation of the coming Messiah, how should God’s people prepare? It is November 25th and the world around us has already saturated with the signs of Christmas. Yes, we moan and complain the growing commercialization of the season while at the same time secretly enjoying the familiar sights and sounds that fill the air. The world turns our eyes Christmas, or least towards the trappings of Christmas. Maybe we Christians should turn our eyes toward Bethlehem and the real meaning of the coming King for us and the world.
I think this passage from the prophet Isaiah chapter 2 is a good place to begin.
Iaiah 2:1-5... This is another vision that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the last days, the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem will become the most important place on earth. People from all over the world will go there to worship. Many nations will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the Temple of the God of Israel. There he will teach us his ways, so that we may obey him." For in those days the LORD's teaching and his word will go out from Jerusalem. The LORD will settle international disputes. All the nations will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. All wars will stop, and military training will come to an end. Come, people of Israel, let us walk in the light of the LORD!
